Privacy
Last Modified: August 11, 2026
The privacy of your data — and it is your data, not ours! — is a big deal to us. In this policy, we lay out: what data we collect and why; how your data is handled; and your rights to your data. We promise we never sell your data: never have, never will.
This policy applies to all products built and maintained by Twos Technologies Incorporated including NewTwos, Müse, Aware, 7 Levels Deep, and Tens.
What we collect and why
Our guiding principle is to collect only what we need. Here's what that means in practice:
Identity & access
When you sign up for a NewTwos product, we typically ask for identifying information such as your name and email address. That's just so you can personalize your new profile, and we can send you updates, or other essential information. We sometimes also give you the option to add a profile picture that displays in our products, but we do not normally look at or access that picture. We'll never sell your personal info to third parties.
Website interactions
When you browse our applications, your browser automatically shares certain information such as which operating system and browser version you are using. We track that information, along with the pages you are visiting, and page load timing. We sometimes track specific link clicks to help inform some design decisions. These web analytics data are tied to your IP address and user profile if applicable and you are signed into our Services.
Location
NewTwos uses location for a handful of clearly-scoped features, and only when you opt into each one. We never sell location data, share it with advertisers, or store any location history. In every case below, you can revoke access at any time in your device settings, and the affected feature will simply stop working — nothing else in NewTwos depends on it.
Approximate location for the World Map (on by default). The World Map shows, anonymously, the general areas where people write things down. To power it, we derive an approximate, city-level location from your IP address when you create a thing. Your own approximate locations are only ever shown back to you; the public World Map displays only aggregated counts by area — never your individual coordinates, the content of your things, or who wrote them. The approximate coordinates are coarsened to a roughly 11-kilometer grid before they are stored. You can turn this off at any time from Settings → Advanced → World Map.
Precise foreground location (opt-in). You can optionally enable “Precise Location” in Settings → Advanced to place your dot on the World Map more accurately. When enabled, we read your device's current coordinates only while NewTwos is open, and apply the same 11-kilometer coarsening before storage. When disabled (the default), we fall back to the IP-based approximate location above.
Location-based reminders (opt-in, background allowed). When you attach a location to a reminder, NewTwos registers a geofence for the place you chose (using Google Play Services geofencing on Android and CoreLocation region monitoring on iOS). The operating system watches for you to enter or exit that place and wakes NewTwos to fire the reminder — even when the app is closed. Because the reminder must be able to fire while the app is closed, this feature requires background location permission on Android (“Allow all the time”) and iOS (“Always”). Your GPS coordinates are used only to check the specific places you set reminders for; they are never transmitted to our servers or shared with third parties, and no location history is stored. If you revoke background location, existing location reminders will simply stop firing.
Cookies and Do Not Track
We do use persistent first-party cookies to store certain preferences, make it easier for you to use our applications, and support some analytics. A cookie is a piece of text stored by your browser to help it remember your login information, site preferences, and more. You can adjust cookie retention settings in your own browser. To learn more about cookies, including how to view which cookies have been set and how to manage and delete them, please visit: www.allaboutcookies.org.
Communications
To provide you with updates, important information, and support for the Services, we may contact you via email, text message, or other methods of communication you have provided. These communications may include, but are not limited to:
• Account-related notifications, such as password resets or security alerts
• Updates about changes to our Services, terms, or policies
• Announcements about new features or improvements to our Services
• Support-related responses to inquiries you have submitted
You can manage your communication preferences at any time through your profile settings or by contacting us. Please note that certain essential communications, such as security or legal notifications, are required and cannot be opted out of.
Voluntary correspondence
When you write NewTwos with a question or to ask for help, we keep that correspondence, including the email address, so that we have a history of past correspondences to reference if you reach out in the future.
We also store any information you volunteer like surveys. Sometimes when we do customer interviews, we may ask for your permission to record the conversation for future reference or use. We only do so if you give your express consent.
Information we do not collect
We don't collect any characteristics of protected classifications including age, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or physical and mental abilities or disabilities. You may provide these data voluntarily, such as if you include a pronoun preference in your email signature when writing into our Support team.
We also do not collect any biometric data. You are given the option to add a picture to your user profile, which could be a real picture of you or a picture of something else that represents you best. We do not extract any information from profile pictures: they are for your use alone.
When we access or share your information
Our default practice is to not access your information. The only times we'll ever access or share your info are:
To provide products or services you've requested. We do use some third-party services to run our applications and only to the extent necessary process some or all of your personal information via these third parties. Having subprocessors means we are using technology to access your data. No NewTwos human looks at your data for these purposes.
To help you troubleshoot or squash a software bug, with your permission. If at any point we need to access your profile to help you with a Support case, we will ask for your consent before proceeding.
To investigate, prevent, or take action regarding restricted uses. Accessing a customer's profile when investigating potential abuse is a measure of last resort. We have an obligation to protect the privacy and safety of both our customers and the people reporting issues to us. We do our best to balance those responsibilities throughout the process. If we do discover you are using our products for a restricted purpose, we will report the incident to the appropriate authorities.
When required under applicable law.
Twos Technologies Incorporated is a US company and all data infrastructure are located in the US.
If US law enforcement authorities have the necessary warrant, criminal subpoena, or court order requiring we share data, we have to comply. Otherwise, we flat-out reject requests from local and federal law enforcement when they seek data. And unless we're legally prevented from it, we'll always inform you when such requests are made. In the event a government authority outside the US approaches NewTwos with a request, our default stance is to refuse unless the US government compels us to comply through procedures outlined in a mutual legal assistance treaty or agreement. We have never received a National Security Letter or Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) order.
Similarly, if NewTwos receives a request to preserve data, we refuse unless compelled by either the US Federal Stored Communications Act, 18 U.S.C. Section 2703(f) or a properly served US subpoena for civil matters. In both of these situations, we have to comply. In these situations, we notify affected customers as soon as possible unless we are legally prohibited from doing so. We do not share preserved data unless absolutely required under the Stored Communications Act or compelled by a court order that we choose not to appeal. Furthermore, unless we receive a proper warrant, court order, or subpoena before the required preservation period expires, we destroy any preserved copies we made of customer data once the preservation period lapses.
If we get an informal request from any person, organization, or entity, we do not assist. If you are a profile owner who wants to export data from their profiles, you can do so by contacting us.
Finally, if Twos Technologies Incorporated is acquired by or merged with another company — we don't plan on that, but if it happens — we'll notify you well before any info about you is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
Developer API, MCP, and AI connectors
NewTwos offers a developer API and a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server so that you — or tools and AI assistants you explicitly authorize (for example, Claude or ChatGPT) — can read and write your own NewTwos data programmatically. Access is entirely opt‑in and is controlled by you.
How access is granted
You grant access in one of two ways: by creating an API key in your settings, or by connecting an application through our OAuth flow, where you sign in and approve the specific permissions (“scopes”) the application is requesting. No third party can reach your data unless you take one of these actions, and you can revoke an API key, or disconnect a connected application, at any time.
What these tools can access
The API and MCP server operate on the same content you already store in NewTwos — your lists, things (to‑dos, notes, hyperlinks), tags, and reminders — limited to the scopes you approve (for example, read‑only versus read‑and‑write). A request can only ever act on your own data; it is scoped to your profile by the key or token used to authenticate it.
What we store, and what we don't
We do not store the content of your API or MCP requests beyond what is needed to fulfill them and to maintain ordinary operational and security logs. Our OAuth access and refresh tokens are cryptographically signed rather than stored, and API keys are stored only as a one‑way hash — never as readable text.
Third‑party assistants
When you connect a third‑party assistant or tool, the data it requests is transmitted to that third party at your direction, and its handling of that data is then governed by that third party's own privacy policy and terms — not ours. We never sell your data, and we do not share it with these services except when you initiate and authorize the connection.
Connecting Slack, Readwise, and Microsoft
NewTwos offers optional integrations that let you bring content in from other services you use. These connections are entirely opt‑in, you set each one up yourself, and you can disconnect at any time. As always, we never sell your data and no NewTwos human looks at the content these integrations move for you.
Slack
If you add the NewTwos app to Slack and connect it to your NewTwos profile, we receive only the content you explicitly send us — the text you submit with the /twos command or the “Save to Twos” message shortcut — together with the Slack workspace and user identifiers we need to route that content to your profile. The app requests only Slack's minimal “commands” permission: we do not access, receive, or store your Slack channels, message history, direct messages you have not sent to us, or files. We store the link between your Slack identity and your NewTwos profile so your captures reach the right place, plus the things you capture (which become your own NewTwos content). We do not retain a Slack access token for ongoing use, and every incoming request is cryptographically verified using Slack's request signing. You can disconnect anytime from Settings → Advanced → Slack, which removes that link.
Readwise
If you connect Readwise, you provide a Readwise access token that you generate in your Readwise account. We store that token encrypted (AES‑256‑GCM) and use it only to fetch your highlights from Readwise on your behalf when you sync; the token is never shown back to you, never written to our logs, and never included in data exports. Synced highlights are imported into your NewTwos profile as lists and things — your own content, handled like the rest of your data under this policy. The highlights themselves come from Readwise, whose handling of your data is governed by Readwise's own privacy policy and terms. You can disconnect anytime from Settings → Advanced → Readwise, which deletes the stored token.
Microsoft To Do and Loop
If you connect Microsoft, you sign in with Microsoft and approve the access yourself. We request read access to your tasks (Tasks.ReadWrite, which is the narrowest scope Microsoft offers for this) plus basic sign-in information, and we use it only to read your Microsoft To Do lists and your Loop task lists. NewTwos never writes anything back to Microsoft: completing a thing here does not complete it there.
Your Loop task lists are read through Microsoft Planner, because that is where a task added to a Loop task list is actually stored. We store the sign-in that lets us keep syncing, encrypted (AES-256-GCM), and it is never shown back to you, never written to our logs, and never included in data exports. We also store, for each list we sync, its Microsoft identifier and a marker on each imported thing, so that re-syncing updates what is already there instead of creating duplicates.
Synced tasks are imported into your NewTwos profile as lists and things, which are your own content, handled like the rest of your data under this policy. The tasks themselves come from Microsoft, whose handling of your data is governed by Microsoft's own privacy statement and terms. You can disconnect anytime from Settings → Advanced → Microsoft, which deletes the stored sign-in and stops the syncing. Anything already imported stays in your profile, and you can delete it like any other content.
Your rights with respect to your information
At NewTwos, we apply the same data rights to all customers, regardless of their location. Currently some of the most privacy-forward regulations in place are the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) and California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”) in the US. NewTwos recognizes all of the rights granted in these regulations, except as limited by applicable law. These rights include:
Right to Know. You have the right to know what personal information is collected, used, shared or sold. We outline both the categories and specific bits of data we collect, as well as how they are used, in this privacy policy.
Right of Access. This includes your right to access the personal information we gather about you, and your right to obtain information about the sharing, storage, security and processing of that information.
Right to Correction. You have the right to request correction of your personal information.
Right to Erasure / “To be Forgotten”. This is your right to request, subject to certain limitations under applicable law, that your personal information be erased from our possession and, by extension, all of our service providers. Fulfillment of some data deletion requests may prevent you from using NewTwos services because our applications may then no longer work. In such cases, a data deletion request may result in closing your profile.
Right to Complain. You have the right to make a complaint regarding our handling of your personal information with the appropriate supervisory authority. To identify your specific authority or find out more about this right, EU individuals should go to https://edpb.europa.eu/about-edpb/board/members_en.
Right to Restrict Processing. This is your right to request restriction of how and why your personal information is used or processed, including opting out of sale of personal information. (Again: we never have and never will sell your personal data.)
Right to Object. You have the right, in certain situations, to object to how or why your personal information is processed.
Right to Portability. You have the right to receive the personal information we have about you and the right to transmit it to another party.
Right to not be subject to Automated Decision-Making. You have the right to object and prevent any decision that could have a legal, or similarly significant, effect on you from being made solely based on automated processes. This right is limited, however, if the decision is necessary for performance of any contract between you and us, is allowed by applicable law, or is based on your explicit consent.
Right to Non-Discrimination. This right stems from the CCPA. We do not and will not charge you a different amount to use our products, offer you different discounts, or give you a lower level of customer service because you have exercised your data privacy rights. However, the exercise of certain rights (such as the right “to be forgotten”) may, by virtue of your exercising those rights, prevent you from using our Services.
Many of these rights can be exercised by signing in and directly updating your profile information.
If you have questions about exercising these rights or need assistance, please contact us at help@twosapp.com. For requests to delete personal information or know what personal information has been collected, we will first verify your identity using a combination of at least two pieces of information already collected including your user email address. If an authorized agent is corresponding on your behalf, we will first need written consent with a signature from the profile holder before proceeding.
If you are in the EU, you can identify your specific authority to file a complaint or find out more about GDPR, at https://edpb.europa.eu/about-edpb/board/members_en.
How we secure your data
All data is encrypted via SSL/TLS when transmitted between your devices and our servers.
Your data is also encrypted at rest. Our databases and their backups are hosted on MongoDB Atlas, where everything stored is encrypted at the storage layer using AES-256. Photos and other file uploads are kept in Amazon S3 with server-side encryption.
Some especially sensitive values get a second layer of encryption on top of that. Passwords, two-factor backup codes, and your app passcode are stored only as one-way bcrypt hashes, so nobody at NewTwos can read them. API keys you create are stored only as a one-way hash. Values we need to be able to use on your behalf, such as a two-factor secret, a list or thing passcode, a connected Readwise token, a connected Microsoft sign-in, or your own AI provider key, are individually encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a key that does not live in the database.
We want to be precise about what this does and does not mean. Encryption at rest protects your data if the underlying storage or a backup is ever accessed directly. It is not end-to-end encryption: your things, lists, and notes have to be readable by our servers so we can sync, search, share, and render them for you, which means we hold the keys. Our practice remains never to look at your content, as described in “When we access or share your information” above.
What happens when you delete data in your product profiles
In many of our applications, we give you the option to trash data. Anything you trash on your product profiles while they are active will be kept in an accessible trash can for up to 30 days (it varies a little by product). After that, the trashed data are no longer accessible via the application and are deleted from our active servers within the next 30 days. We also have some backups of our application databases, which are kept for up to another 30 days. In total, when you trash things in our applications, they are purged within 90 days from all of our systems and logs. Retrieving data for a single profile from a backup is cost-prohibitive and unduly burdensome so if you change your mind you'll need to do so before your data are deleted from our active servers.
We also delete your data after a profile is cancelled. In this case, there is no period of data being kept in an accessible trash can so your data are purged within 60 days. This applies both for cases when a profile owner directly cancels and for auto-cancelled profiles.
Location of site and data
Our products and other web properties are operated in the United States. If you are located in the European Union or elsewhere outside of the United States, please be aware that any information you provide to us will be transferred to and stored in the United States. By using our Site, participating in any of our services and/or providing us with your information, you consent to this transfer.
When transferring personal data from the EU
The GDPR requires that any data transferred out of the EU must be treated with the same level of protection that the EU privacy laws grant. The privacy laws of the United States generally do not meet that requirement. That is why NewTwos offers a data processing addendum incorporating the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, which are the primary legal mechanism we rely on for these transfers. (The EU-US Privacy Shield Framework, in which we previously participated, was invalidated by the Court of Justice of the European Union in July 2020 and has since been replaced by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.)
We have incorporated a Data Processing Addendum to our Terms of Service that is in effect when the GDPR applies to your use of NewTwos Services to process Customer Data as defined in the DPA. You can find the DPA linked within clause 7 of the Uptime, Security and Privacy section. The DPA includes the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses (both controller-processor and controller-controller) to extend GDPR privacy principles, rights, and obligations everywhere personal data is processed. The DPA is extensive so to aid our customers, we have provided both a summary of what they mean and how Twos Technologies Incorporated upholds our responsibilities in our Privacy Regulation Reference. If you prefer to have an executed copy of the Data Processing Addendum, you may sign a copy online. Regardless of whether you execute or not, we protect and secure your data to the high standards set out in the addendum.
EU-US, UK, and Swiss data transfers
The EU-US Privacy Shield was an agreement that, up until July 16, 2020, allowed for the transfer of personal data from the EU to the US. It was invalidated by the Court of Justice of the European Union (the “Schrems II” decision), and the analogous Swiss-US Privacy Shield was likewise set aside. In 2023 the EU-US Privacy Shield was replaced by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, together with the UK Extension to that framework and the Swiss-US Data Privacy Framework.
Whether or not a given transfer is covered by the Data Privacy Framework, NewTwos relies on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses — incorporated through the Data Processing Addendum described above — as the operative legal basis for transferring EU, UK, and Swiss personal data into the United States. We apply the same protections to that data as we do to all customer data under this policy.
For clarity, the following commitments apply to all EU, UK, and Swiss data that is transferred into the United States:
Individuals have the right to access their personal data and to update, correct, and/or amend information that is incomplete. Individuals also have the right to request erasure of personal information that has been improperly processed. Individuals wishing to exercise these rights may do so by signing in and directly updating their profile information. If you have questions about exercising these rights or need assistance, please contact us at help@twosapp.com.
We remain liable for the onward transfer of personal data to third parties acting as our agents unless we can prove we were not a party to the events giving rise to the damages.
We do not sell personal data nor do we permit it to be used for reasons other than those for which it was originally provided. If this practice should change in the future, we will update this policy accordingly and provide individuals with opt-out or opt-in choice as appropriate.
We may be required to release personal data in response to lawful requests from public authorities including to meet national security and law enforcement requirements.
We commit to resolving complaints about your privacy and our collection or use of your personal information. European Union, United Kingdom, or Swiss individuals with inquiries or complaints regarding this privacy policy should first contact Parker Klein at NewTwos at help@twosapp.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority; EU individuals can identify their authority at https://edpb.europa.eu/about-edpb/board/members_en, and UK individuals can contact the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at https://ico.org.uk/.
Changes & questions
We may update this policy as needed to comply with relevant regulations and reflect any new practices. Whenever we make a significant change to our policies, we will also announce them on our company blog.
