ADHD Friendly Mind Palace
by Scott Fry · 32 things on NewTwos
- For an ADHD brain, the biggest trap of a traditional Mind Palace is "over-engineering." If you spend 20 minutes trying to visualize a 50-room castle, you’ll likely lose focus before you even start memorizing.
- A "Micro-Palace" is a stripped-down, ADHD-friendly version that focuses on high-speed setup and high-stimulation imagery. Here is how to build one.
- Phase 1: The "Small Box" Selection
- Instead of a whole house, pick a single, high-detail area you can see in your mind without trying.
- The Desktop: Your current desk setup (laptop, lamp, coffee mug, plant).
- The Dashboard: Your car’s steering wheel, radio, glove box, and cup holder.
- The Fridge: The top shelf, the egg tray, the door bins, the crisper.
- The Body: Your own body (Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes—literally).
- Phase 2: The "Clockwise Rule" (L.O.C.I.)
- ADHD brains often struggle with sequence. To fix this, always move in a strict clockwise circle or a top-to-bottom line.
- Example: The Coffee Station Micro-Palace
- The Toaster (Locus 1)
- The Coffee Maker (Locus 2)
- The Sugar Jar (Locus 3)
- The Sink (Locus 4)
- Phase 3: The ADHD "Secret Sauce" (Action & Bizarreness)
- Standard images are boring. Boring = Invisible to ADHD. To make it stick, use the S.M.A.S.H. method:
- Size: Make the item giant or microscopic.
- Movement: It must be doing something (exploding, dancing, melting).
- Alliteration: Match the word to the action (e.g., "Dancing Dates").
- Senses: Imagine the smell or the physical "crunch" of the image.
- Humor/Horror: If it’s funny or gross, your brain will prioritize it.
- A Quick Practice Run
- Let’s say you need to remember a 3-item to-do list: Call the bank, Buy milk, Pick up a package.
- Location: Your Bathroom Sink.
- Item 1 (Bank): See a giant Gold Bar sitting on your Toothbrush. When you try to pick it up, it’s heavy and smells like pennies.
- Item 2 (Milk): See your Faucet spraying Cold White Milk instead of water. The sink is overflowing with bubbles.
- Item 3 (Package): Your Soap Dispenser is now a Cardboard Box that keeps "barking" like there's a dog inside it.
- 3 Tips to Maintain the Habit
- Don't Re-use Immediately: If you use your "Bathroom Sink" for a grocery list today, don't use it for work tasks tomorrow. The images will "ghost" (overlap) and cause confusion. Have 3-4 small locations you rotate.
- Sketch It: If your visualization feels "blurry," take 30 seconds to doodle the 4-5 points of your Micro-Palace on a sticky note. The physical act of drawing anchors the spatial memory.
- The "Entrance" Ritual: Always start your mental walk by "touching" the first object (e.g., "I am touching the cold toaster"). This helps your brain shift from "distraction mode" to "retrieval mode."
