- "write what makes you angry" - Po Bronson
- helps to index your brain
- "I don't know what I think until I write"
- O - obligations
- don't want to use brain to store problems, we want to use it solve problems
- how to do this:
- obligation dump - anything that could remotely be an obligation is put down on paper
- organize it: admin, family, finance, health, work
- prioritize: use one guiding question --> "which one* thing on this list, if done, would make everything else easier?"
- to-do list: divide tasks up by the bare minimum you need to get done & those you would get done if you were having a "killing it" day
- M - mindset
- operating system on which your brain runs on
- 6 techniques:
- reframing - "how is the best thing that ever happened to me?"
- possibility - "----because---" statements.
- example: [identity statement] because [actions you are taking]
- inversion - practicing a reaction to problem to everyday problems. think about it in the inverse. instead of asking "how can I draw more?" ask "how can I draw less". you can leave your drawing notebooks hidden, spend extra time on your phone, etc. in the end - it helps you identify what you are doing wrong so you have an idea and action on what to do right.
- perspective - if you were a friend giving you advice on this situation and you really wanted to proceed. what would you tell yourself.
- discipline - just do it. even if you don't feel like it.
- gratitude - 3 things you are grateful for.
- something mundane
- something that happened by chance
- something that you made happen
- I - ideate
- technique 1: you've got a problem to solve. give yourself 5 minutes to write down 30 answers before the timer goes off. don't edit until it's over.
- technique 2: ask: how would ____ solve this problem?
- technique 3: open the loop
- ask the question before bed, sleep on it and wake up and close the loop
- T - trajectory
- direction (macro) - write down your goal. look at the day/week you just had and see if you are moving away from the goal or towards that goal. divide into "evidence of away", "evidence towards", and "actionables & learnings"
- day-to-day (micro) - hidden metrics made visible. do this everyday:
- What excited me?
- What drained me of energy?
- What did I learn?
