- Ingredients:
- 4 cups of milk
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
- 4 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- Optional: 1/2 cup of rum or bourbon (for adults only)
- Optional: Whipped cream and additional nutmeg for garnish
- Preparation:
- In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over medium heat until it starts to simmer. Do not let it boil.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar and egg yolks until well combined.
- Slowly pour about 1/2 cup of the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
- Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk mixture, whisking continuously.
- Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, ground nutmeg, and ground cinnamon. If desired, add the rum or bourbon and stir well.
- Let the eggnog cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until chilled.
- Before serving, give the eggnog a good stir. Pour into glasses and garnish with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg, if desired. Enjoy!
